More about The Father of my Children

Gregoire (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing of Michael Haneke’s Cache), a Parisian film producer, has it all — a beautiful wife (Chiara Caselli, Ripley’s Game, Waiting for the Messiah), three adorable daughters, wealth and a buzzing career. On the surface he seems invincible, maintaining humor and charm as he tirelessly juggles the demands of his production company with his family’s needs. Even as he speeds to the countryside to spend long weekends with them, he’s still working – cajoling money from financiers with a phone tucked under his ear, a cigarette in one hand and the steering wheel in the other. His latest production is running way over budget thanks to a temperamental Scandinavian director, a situation that will prove the greatest test of Gregoire and his family’s love and resilience.

Acclaimed director Mia Hansen-Love (All Is Forgiven) has acknowledged that her movie was inspired by the experience of Humbert Balsan, a successful French producer whose credits include Lars von Trier’s Manderlay. Hansen-Love explores the bonds between parents and children, and husbands and wives, and asks if the frayed family bonds can withstand the pressures upon them. Both delicate and devastating, The Father of my Children is, as Film Comment called it, an “incredibly tender and heartbreaking” experience.
