Donnie Yen’s Ip Man coming to The Samsung Experience this Thursday

In order to continue doing screening events at the Samsung Experience, ScenePR – which sponsors networking events for indie filmmakers around New York – needs to get a blowout crowd there this Thursday, November 11th, when they will be screening Wilson Yip’s Ip Man. And If you sign up today (Nov. 8th) by midnight, it’s only $2 dollars to get in. That’s right, a feature film screening for two pesos. But you have to sign up by midnight or the price reverts back to $5, still a steal for a high-tech, high-def screening of the instant ‘cult cinema icon’ Ip Man, starring action superstar Donnie Yen.

Wilson Yip’s Ip Man, a biopic with a distant relationship to the actual life of the Chinese martial arts master of the title (whose students included Bruce Lee), is a proletarian kung fu movie. First seen living the bourgeois good life in southern China in the 1930s, Ip Man (Donnie Yen) achieves heroic status only after war forces him to resort to manual labor and leads him to teach a factory’s workers how to defend themselves against bandits. The film was a box office hit in China and its sequel, Ip Man 2, will be one of the world’s top-grossing non-English-language films this year.

So show some support for these types of screening events, even if you’re not in NYC and can’t make this one. They showcase excellent films that U.S. audiences unfortunately rarely get exposure too. And with the video store going the way of the dinosaur, these films have an even more difficult time being found on disc (legally).
