The holiday rush of trailers featuring Hollywood’s upcoming blockbusters continues with the Harald Zwart-directed Karate Kid remake, starring Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan and Taraji P. Henson. This isn’t first journey into remake territory. He helmed The Pink Panther 2, which MGM released earlier this year. The new version transplants the story of a teen facing down bullies, to Beijing China, and replaces Ralph Macchio’s Daniel-san with Jaden Smith’s Dre-san, and also replaces Pat Morita with Jackie Chan.
After being attacked by some local youths, Dre is saved by Mr. Han (Chan), who agrees to tutor him in martial arts, so he can face them head on.
The training scenes look credible, and the story seems to carry over well. I’m actually looking forward to this remake, with caution. The Karate Kid was one of my favorite films of the 80’s.
