A few sites have been posting this first trailer for The Shinjuku Incident, which is directed by Derek “Tung-Shing” Yee and produced by Jackie Chan. The film also stars Naoto Takenaka, Xu Jinglei, Daniel Wu, Fan Bingbing and Ken Watanabe.

The gritty-looking thriller is being described as a more dramatic turn for Chan, according to interviews with the director of the film. I guess that means we won’t see as many of Chan’s trademark daring live-action stunt work. The story takes place in the early 1990s, when a tractor mechanic from China nicknamed “Steelhead” (Chan) enters Japan illegally, in search of his girlfriend Xiu Xiu (Jinglei). Steelhead and his friend, Jie (Wu) meet in the bustling Shinjuku district and take manual labor jobs to earn a living, until Steelhead learns that Xiu Xiu has married a Japanese Yakuza leader named Eguchi (Watanabe). Steelhead still decides to stay in Japan, possibly hoping to win back his love, and agrees to work for Eguchi as a killer, in order to obtain citizenship, and quickly becomes drunk with power. Soon he has become embroiled so deeply in the ways of the yakuza that there is no turning back.

The Shinjuku Incident is due in Asian theaters in April of 2009.

The person who posted the video below on YouTube, was cool enough to add translated annotations, who we know what’s being said.
