More about Filth and Wisdom
Madonna teams with rock sensation Eugene Hutz for a startling exploration of what it takes to be a creative artist.
Madonna makes a bold and uncompromising move behind the camera in her first film as writer-director, Filth and Wisdom, a one-of-a-kind look at something close to her heart: the undeniable artistic impulse. The genre-defying film – a rowdy, romantic, kinky, comic rock drama, starring the equally unique Eugene Hutz of the acclaimed gypsy punk group Gogol Bordello – comes to DVD September 29, 2009, via IFC Films and MPI Media Group.
Madonna and co-scripter Dan Cadan set their story in a London flat where three disparate – and increasingly desperate – roommates struggle to make ends meet while also trying to achieve their dreams. A.K. (Hutz) is a Ukrainian immigrant rocker who finances his goal of gaining “trans-continental superstardom” by turning tricks as a role-playing cross-dresser. Holly (Holly Weston from Splintered) is an aspiring ballerina (and object of A.K.’s unspoken love) who works as a pole-climbing stripper while she waits for her big break. Kleptomaniac Juliette (Vicky McClure from A Room For Romeo Brass) steals medicine from her pharmaceutical job with the intention of aiding suffering Africans. Living upstairs from this odd trio is a blind professor (Richard E. Grant from Withnail & I, The Age Of Innocence) who dispenses the wisdom that helps them get past all the filth with their dignity intact.
