Spielberg to direct feature version of Pulitzer Prize-winning play next

Steven Spielberg has committed to his next film – an adaptation of the Mary Chase Pulitzer Prize-winning play Harvey, which will be a co-production between Fox and DreamWorks, according to Variety.

First-time screenwriter and bestselling novelist Jonathan Tropper penned the script.

Harvey is the story of an amiable eccentric and his friendship with a six and one-half foot tall invisible rabbit, and how it affects every member of his family and community. The play won the Pulitzer Prize in 1944, and was previously turned into the 1950 Universal film with Jimmy Stewart and Josephine Hull.

The new film will be produced by Spielberg and Don Gregory, with Elizabeth Gabler and Carla Hacken overseeing for Fox 2000, which acquired the rights last year.

I guess the speculation about the iconic director digging into a Matt Helm film next are now dashed to the rocks.
