Variety reports that Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television has nabbed a straight-to-series order from CBS for 13 episodes of a futuristic drama thriller titled Extant, set to air in summer 2014. The summer scheduling reflects the Network’s increased interest in original summer programming, following the successful debut of Amblin and Brian K. Vaughan’s Under the Dome on Monday nights. Under the Dome was originally marketed as a one-season event, but shortly after drawing 17.8 million for its June 24th premiere, it was renewed for a second season.

Extant centers on a female astronaut attempting to reconnect with her family after a year in outer space and her experiences that seem to be affecting the course of history.
