Film Fetish trivia:
Vin Diesel and director Rob Cohen signed on for this film two months before the original opened. Both left the project.

Director Lee Tamahori also helmed the James Bond film Die Another Day, starring Pierce Brosnan.

Two scripts were written for consideration. One by screenwriter Rich Wilkes involved pirates in Southeast Asia and the other, by writer Simon Kinberg, concerns a plot set in Washington D.C. Kinberg’s script was selected. Open casting calls in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. area were made on August 19, 2004 and August 26, 2004. Shooting started on 14 September 2004 and went through October 1, 2004. Rob Cohen had earlier suggested that that both scripts may be made, with the one not used for XXX2 becoming XXX3.
