The Gospel Seeks Foregiveness

There’s no doubt that African-American cinema is gaining in popularity. From Ice Cube’s Are We There Yet? to Tyler Perry’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman, 2005 has seen a diverse slate of surprise hits. What Hollywood has to be careful of is releasing poor quality product to simply cash in. That could very easily derail future growth and success for quality filmmakers of color.

I believe we are seeing this happen on genre cinema, including action and dramas. Many films being released in 2005, and making $20 million in week one, would have made $50 million just 3 years ago, during the same cycle. People are tired of the same ole’ thing. And tired of trash cinema.

Enough of my rants. My man Charles gets on the boards 2 times today, with a review of The Gospel. The title is pretty much self-explanatory. The film revolves around a successful young R&B singer that has an unlikely homecoming when his father, a bishop, becomes ill.
