Sci-Fi Wire reports that the Peter Jackson-produced, Neill Blomkamp-directed sci-fi action thriller District 9 will open at midnight this Thursday in advance of its Friday premiere date of August 14th.

District 9 follows the story of extraterrestrial refugees in a sort of reservation in modern-day South Africa. It’s been 28 years since the aliens made first contact, but there was never any attack from the skies, nor any profound technological revelation able to advance our society. The visitors, who are the last of their kind, were instead treated as refugees. In order to accommodate them, the government of South Africa set up a makeshift home in District 9 as politicians and world leaders debated how to deal with the situation. As humans begin to grow wary of the unwelcome intruders, a private company called Multi-National United (MNU) is assigned the task of controlling the aliens, however MNU is less interested in their welfare than trying to understand how their weaponry works. That’s because should they manage to make a breakthrough, they will receive massive research funding. Unfortunately, the highly advanced weaponry requires alien DNA to be activated. When MNU field operative Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is exposed to biotechnology that causes his DNA to mutate, tensions between the aliens and the humans intensifies.

District 9 also stars Jason Cope, Nathalie Boltt, Sylvaine Strike, Elizabeth Mkandawie, John Summer, William Allen Young, Greg Melvill-Smith and Nick Blake.
