Adam Shankman (Hairspray) has signed on to direct Sinbad Sony Pictures, according to Variety.

Shankman is in final negotiations to develop a take on classic epic adventure Sinbad. The long-in-development feature has had a number of directors attached through the years, including John Singleton and Rob Cohen.

The original film follows the adventures of Sinbad and his crew, who are marooned off the coast of China and embark on a quest to find the lamp of Aladdin.

The director told Variety, “Sinbad gives me the opportunity to really stretch my imagination as far as I can take it.” Being that it was quite a stretch for a studio to attach a guy whose specialty is comedies and musicals, to an action/adventure epic, I guess that shouldn’t be too difficult.

Film Fetish Trivia:Lou Ferrigno, who played the Incredible Hulk in the 1970s TV cult television series, played Sinbad in the 1989 film Sinbad of the Seven Seas.
