DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek the Halls debuts on DVD tomorrow, November 4th 2008. The fun but too-short story originally premiered on ABC television in November of 2007.

Again featuring the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas, the best parts of the holiday short film are the various takes on the Night Before Christmas theme, which range from Donkey’s decor display, Gingy’s story about a murderous Santa with a sweet tooth and Shrek’s amusing Ogre Claus tale.

The movie plays like a neat little holiday diversion for kids, and should do well as a gift item for those with Shrek-mania, but it should have been extended for the DVD release, or had more Shrek bonus features. The only Shrek-themed extra is a game called Gingy’s Dunking Game, that’s accessible from a DVD player. The other game is a demo for Shrek’s Carnival Craze, and that requires installing the disc on your PC. The other extras are two holiday sing-alongs, featuring the cast of DreamWorks’ other animated franchise, Madagascar.

If you put yourself into holiday mode and enjoy the DVD on that level, it can be a nice addition to any household for the season. I also enjoyed the modernized takes on classic holiday themes and songs.

Here’s a full list of the Shrek the Halls DVD bonus features:

  • The Twelve Days of Christmas Sing Along – Join along and watch the entire Madagascar gang as they celebrate the holidays in style with their own take on the “Twelve Days of Christmas.” Sing along to the Madagascar-inspired lyrics, including “lemurs leaping, foosas fussing and a penguin who made a loud squeak!” In classic sing-along style, the words appear on screen as the characters perform.
  • Deck The Halls Sing Along – Deck the halls, it’s time to party. This is your chance to sing along with everyone’s favorite Penguins from Madagascar. Join Skipper, Private and Kowalski for their version of the classic holiday song as they get into the spirit of the season.
  • Gingy’s Dunking Game – Test your skills at being a master baker and make sure you have plenty of flour as you try to match the Gingerbread cookies that come out of the oven with the Gingy that appears on screen.
  • Shrek Carnival Craze video game demo and cheat code
  • DreamWorks Animation Video Jukebox
