Trailer for Hardcore Henry is telling filmmakers to wake the f*ck up and break some rules

First we had George Miller tell the world that the art of filmmaking ain’t dead with Mad Max: Fury Road. Now with have Ilya Naishuller agreeing whole-heartedly with the action thriller Hardcore Henry. Fuck technology, fuck the stream, fuck it all and break rules in order to bring film to a new place. If Hardcore Henry has even half of the kinetic energy as this trailer, we might just have the droid we’re looking for. It must be kismet, just before I received the email with this trailer, I was watching Steve McQueen’s Bullitt and thinking to myself ‘why aren’t there filmmakers out there breaking rules today and making not worried about technology or some bullshit high art. But just going out there and blowing the doors off of movie sets and making fun, adventurous movies.’ Well somebody smiled down on me with the trailer for Hardcore Henry.

Strap in. Hardcore Henry is being described as one of the most unflinchingly original wild-rides to hit the big screen in a long time: You remember nothing. Mainly because you’ve just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry. Five minutes later, you are being shot at, your wife has been kidnapped, and you should probably go get her back. Who’s got her? His name’s Akan (Danila Kozlovsky); he’s a powerful warlord with an army of mercenaries, and a plan for world domination. You’re also in an unfamiliar city of Moscow, and everyone wants you dead. Everyone except for a mysterious British fellow called Jimmy (Sharlto Copley). He may be on your side, but you aren’t sure. If you can survive the insanity, and solve the mystery, you might just discover your purpose and the truth behind your identity. Good luck, Henry. You’re likely going to need it.

The film also stars Cyrus Arnold, Darya Charusha, Will Stewart, Jake Karlen, Svetlana Ustinova and Andrei Dementiev.

Hardcore Henry crashes into theaters on April 8, 2016. Check out the trailer below, along with still images and the poster for the first-person shooter.
