Oliver Stone movie about drug kingpin gets financial injection

Earthworks Entertainment recently announced that it has placed equity in the upcoming film Escobar, a movie that Oliver Stone is executive producing. Simultaneously with the announcement, the Company also announced that James Reach has joined the production and distribution firm, and will head up the newly formed Earthworks Films subsidiary.

Reach previously founded Beyond Reach Entertainment, where he co-wrote and produced his first full-length feature film, Something’s Wrong in Kansas. In 2006, he partnered with Sony and produced the film Blonde Ambition. Reach and Oliver Stone are co-producing Escobar, a feature film that will chronicle the life of Pablo Escobar.

In addition to the Escobar movie, Reach also says Earthworks is in negotiations with video game developers to produce a game which will be released with the movie in 2009.

Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Shooter) is attached to direct Escobar, which will be based on the book by Roberto Escobar.

Film Fetish Trivia: Escobar is one of two films being readied for release in 2009, based on the life of Pablo Escobar. The other is Killing Pablo, which is being helmed by Joe Carnahan, and is based on the book Killing Pablo, by Mark Bowden, which will focus on how Escobar was brought down by US special forces and intelligence, the Colombian military, and a vigilante gang controlled by the Cali cartel. Christian Bale and Chris Pine are attached, along with Edgar Ramirez (The Bourne Ultimatum) in the title role.
