Fox is teaming up with Electronic Arts to turn the Spore game, which has developed into a worldwide ecosystem – into an animated monster film, with Chris Wedge (Ice Age) attached to direct, according to Variety.

Greg Erb and Jason Oremland, who wrote Disney’s upcoming The Princess and the Frog, will write the screenplay for the Spore movie, which is being produced by EA and Blue Sky Studios, the studio behind the Ice Age films, Robots and the upcoming Rio.

In the game, players create their own creatures and habitats, then share them with other gamers, creating a universe that continues to spread.

According to the report, just last week, Fox nabbed the rights to Leaf Men for Wedge to direct, winning a contest against Pixar. Wedge is also developing the live-action film The Invention of Hugo Cabret for Warner Bros., with Graham King and Johnny Depp producing.

EA also has set up a film adaptation of The Sims brewing at Fox, as well as Army of Two set up at Universal Pictures, with Hancock director Peter Berg attached to the helm. Also at Universal is a Dante’s Inferno adaptation, which Strike Entertainment is producing. Also in the pipeline, Disturbia director DJ Caruso will helm an adaptation of the game Dead Space, and a Mass Effect movie is coming from producer Avi Arad.
