A production company called Death Ray Films is teaming with Maya Entertainment to bring the Dark Horse comic El Zombo Fantasma to the big screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Death Ray partner Kevin Munroe (TMNT) will write and direct the project, with his partners Chris Patton and Robert Sanchez producing.

The 2005 comic tells the story of a temperamental, murdered Mexican wrestler who returns from his eternal damnation to play guardian angel to a troubled Los Angeles teenager. Zombo learns the teen is not what she seems and that their fates are intertwined. The character was created by David Wilkins and Munroe when they worked at a video game company.

Death Ray hopes to launch a franchise with the hero and are also planning on an animated series based on the character. Zombo has been described as a “Latino Hellboy”.

Jose Martinez of Maya Entertainment, and Kellvin Chavez, who runs Latino Review, are also on board as producers.
