The Get Down is a throwback to the roots of hip-hop with a lead named Shaolin Fantastic

The Get Down tells the New York story of how, at the brink of bankruptcy, the city gave birth to a new art form. Set in 1977, this music-driven drama series chronicles the rise of hip-hop and the last days of disco, told through the lives, music, art and dance of a group of South Bronx kids who changed the world forever.

The Get Down is from Baz Luhrmann and a team of collaborators including four-time Oscar winner Catherine Martin, legendary MC and executive producer Nas, associate producer Grandmaster Flash, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, co-creator and executive producer Stephen Adly Guirgis, along with expert collaborators, including hip-hop historian and supervising producer Nelson George.

The series stars Shameik Moore as Shaolin Fantastic, Justice Smith as Ezekiel “Books” Figuero, Herizen Guardiola as Mylene Cruz, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Cadillac, Jaden Smith as Dizzee Kipling, Skylan Brooks as Ra-Ra Kipling, Tremaine Brown Jr. as Boo Boo Kiping, Mamoudou Athie as Grandmaster Flash, Jimmy Smits as Francisco “Papa Fuerte” Cruz, and Giancarlo Esposito as Ramon Cruz.
