Walt Disney Studios and IMAX announced that tickets for TRON Night: An IMAX 3D Experience, featuring an exclusive 20-plus minute sneak-peek of their highly anticipated TRON: Legacy, sold out rapidly after going on sale October 12th for the October 28th screenings in 120 IMAX theaters across the U.S. and Canada. “TRON Night” is not unlike “Avatar Day”, when James Cameron and Avatar’s producers screened between 10 and 20 minutes of that film just a few months before its December 2009 release. Although Avatar Day was a free event.

“The response to TRON Night has been truly remarkable,” said IMAX president Greg Foster. “Over 70 percent of the available TRON Night tickets sold out in just a few hours, with some locations selling out in five minutes. Fans came out in unprecedented numbers, which reaffirms our excitement and commitment to this worldwide event. ‘TRON: Legacy,’ Disney and IMAX are the perfect fit and this occasion only marks the beginning of what’s to come on December 17th with the launch of this event movie.”

Although tickets to TRON Night events in the U.S. and Canada are now completely sold out, tickets to select IMAX 3D midnight screenings of the feature TRON: Legacy are on sale now.

TRON: Legacy is a 3D sci-fi action adventure set in a digital world described as being unlike anything captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), a rebellious 27-year-old, is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his father Kevin Flynn (Oscar and Golden Globe winner Jeff Bridges), a man once known as the world’s leading video-game developer. When Sam investigates a strange signal sent from the abandoned Flynn’s Arcade—that could have only come from his father—he finds himself pulled into a world where Kevin has been trapped for 20 years. With the help of a fearless warrior named Quorra (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-or-death journey across a visually stunning universe—created by Kevin Himself—which has become far more advanced with never-before-imagined vehicles, weapons and landscapes, along with a ruthless villain who will stop at nothing to prevent their escape.

TRON: Legacy is directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver and Steven Lisberger. The story is by Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal, with a script by Kitsis and Horowitz, and based on characters created by Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird. Scored by Grammy Award–winning electronic music duo Daft Punk, TRON: Legacy hits theaters, 3D theaters and IMAX 3D, on December 17, 2010.
