Coming this fall for Keanu Reeves, who is currently repenting his sins in Constantine, is A Scanner Darkly. We have some information on the film, including a link to the Yahoo Movies exclusive trailer, some cools photos and more.
The film is adapted from a Philip K. Dick story about an undercover cop from the future who’s hooked on a drug that has given him a split personality as a narcotics dealer. It is widely considered one of Dick’s best works, well-informed by Dick’s own painful experiences in the drug culture of California in the 1970s. It neatly balances Dick’s own autobiographical experiences, the narrative’s plot requirements and infuses it with Dick’s customary black humor.
Set in a future world where America has lost the war on drugs, an undercover cop, Fred, is one of many agents hooked on the popular drug Substance D, which causes its users to develop split personalities. Fred, for instance, is also Bob, a notorious drug dealer. Along with his superior officers, Fred sets up an elaborate scheme to catch Bob and tear down his operation.
A Scanner Darkly is being distributed by Warner Independent Pictures and also stars Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr. and Woody Harrelson.
Directed by Richard Linklater, A Scanner Darkly was shot in live action, with the final film presented in computer animation created by digitally painting over the images.
Hopes are high on this one, that while it may not be the new Matrix at the box office, but it just might appease even the most rabid Dick fan (dedicated fans of Philip K. Dick). This specially after the disappointing likes of Impostor and Paycheck which were also based on the author’s material.
Reeves, who turned 40 last summer, is also is preparing to shoot the romantic drama Il Mare, reuniting with his Speed co-star Sandra Bullock.
