New Line is betting its twine, some bubble gum and a pencil, that the TV show MacGyver can become a feature film franchise. This just had to happen sometime, right.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Raffaella De Laurentiis – daughter of iconic Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis – is producing a film based on the MacGyver television series, alongside the show’s creator Lee David Zlotoff. Dino De Laurentiis is executive producing the project.

MacGyver was an adventure series that focused on a man who used science, wits and trickery, rather than guns and braun, to get out sticky situations. The show ran from 1985 to 1992 on ABC, and starred Richard Dean Anderson – who was later featured in Stargate: Atlantis and SG-1 – as an incredibly resourceful secret agent for the Phoenix Foundation who frequently would escape from all manner of dangerous situations with his engineering wizardry.
