There has been an explosion of creators of color finally being equipped with resources and a huge platform. In the streaming age, content has a more global perspective. You can see this in the popularity of television from Asia, Europe and Latin America that the unique can also be universal. My story is a testament to that as well.

The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage.

During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For this, we are sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented.

Today, the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith's actions at the Oscars, in addition to accepting his resignation. The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.

We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances. We also want to thank our hosts, nominees, presenters and winners for their poise and grace during our telecast.

This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith's behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring trust in the Academy. We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted.

Jack Valenti, then head of the Motion Picture Association of America, famously warned against the use of VCRs at a congressional hearing in 1982. Hollywood was concerned about a machine that could record television programs without requiring any fees. History shows Valenti couldn’t have been more wrong, as consumers ended up spending billions to buy and rent copies of their favorite movies. By 1986, the $4.4 billion consumers spent buying and renting VHS tapes exceeded the $3.8 billion they spent going to the movies at the theater. On July 21, 2016, Japanese manufacturer Funai Electric, the last maker of VHS-compatible video cassette recorders, announced that they would cease producing the devices at the end of the month due to declining sales. Sony said it would cease production of video tapes in its Betamax format in 2015, 13 years after it stopped making compatible recorders.

Rich people only like being around rich people. Nobody likes being around poor people, especially poor people. So we try and make the place feel upscale for everyone. That is to say we cater to people who have discretion and judgment and we give them a choice and we are consistent in that.

Innovation should be accessible to and we argue - is more important for - the common everyday citizen. The average person should understand, be able to afford, and clearly see ways to integrate new products and ideas into their daily lives. New concepts should disrupt without forcing someone to uproot their existing worlds. That seamless disruption then improves and enriches a person's current life, not the life someone else is forcing you to embrace. For us, that's innovation.

Too often in the industry I hear people say, ‘Oh, yeah, we bought that, it’s a piece of crap, but it’ll make money.’ But those are words we’re never going to utter because what we’re trying to do is build up credibility in our brand. We make very few compromises in programming, and we want to do the same on the distribution side.
