State Theatre – Ann Arbor

The State Theatre opened in 1942. In 1977 Butterfield Theatres divided the State into a 4-screen multiplex, modernizing the previously single screen venue. Then in 1987, the Theatre was sold to Tom Borders, who redesigned the main floor for retail, preserving the 2nd floor for movie screenings.

In 1997 Borders sold the State Theatre to a local investor group that contracted with Michigan Theater two years later to provide film programming and marketing services to the State. The Michigan Theater completed its purchase of the State Theatre cinemas in September of 2014 in order to preserve and protect the iconic State Theatre marquee as a part of the Ann Arbor landscape.
