The contest to be first to the box office for War of Gods from Relativity and Clash of the Titans at Warner Brothers, is getting heated according to The Hollywood Reporter. Both films are currently casting their lead roles, with Henry Cavill attached to star in Gods and Sam Worthington (soon to be featured in Terminator Salvation) in negotiations to star in Titans.

Additionally, both projects have set production start dates, with Gods tentatively planned for a February 2009 shoot, and Titans slated to kick off two months later in April.

Both studios have been in a ferocious effort to get their movies in theaters before the other.

War of the Gods is Charles and Vlas Parlapanides’ story of Greek warrior Theseus’ battle against demons in ancient Greece. That film will be produced by the filmmakers behind 300 and helmed by Tarsem Singh (The Fall).

Clash of the Titans was set up before first by Warners. It will be directed by Louis Leterrier (Danny the Dog, The Incredible Hulk), looks at very similar storylines and characters as Gods. It follows the mythological character Perseus and his battle to save Princess Andromeda from villains such as Medusa and the Kraken monster.

Film Fetish Trivia: Well-respected screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote The Empire Strikes Back, is penning the screenplay for Clash of the Titans.
