The Strand Bookstore

Strand Book Store is New York City’s legendary home of 18 Miles of new, used and rare books & manuscripts. The Strand is an independent bookseller located at the corner of East 12th Street in the East Village section of Manhattan. In addition to the main location, the store’s Central Park kiosk is open on fair weather days at the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 60th Street. Strand also operates Club Monaco Shop in Shop in partnership with Club Monaco that sells clothing and books in one location. The Strand Bookstore was located across the street from Forbidden Planet NYC, the New York “franchise” of the U.K. cult entertainment retailer Forbidden Planet.

The Strand was originally opened by Benjamin Bass in 1927 on nearby Fourth Avenue, in what was then known as “Book Row,” which was established as early as 1890, and which had at the time 48 bookstores. Bass’s son Fred took over the business in 1956 and moved the store into its current location at 12th Street and Broadway. The store occupies three and a half floors and as of December 2011, housed 2.5 million books.
