Mike Mitchell (Sky High, Surviving Christmas) will direct Warner Bros.’ long-in-development supernatural action comedy Monster Squad, formerly known as Nightcrawlers, according to THR.

Nightcrawlers/Monster Squad, a spec script by Brian Lynch, has gone through numerous writers, including Michael Arndt and Audrey Wells, as the studio searched for the right balance of laughs and scares. Brad Copeland (Wild Hogs) drafted the most current version of the script.

Monster Squad is not a remake of the cult classic 1987 film written by Shane Black. The new film follows a neurotic father who must turn to a childhood tormentor to face his lifelong fear of the dark and the monsters who have haunted him.

Chris Bender, J.C. Spink, Jonathan Shestack, Charlie Gogolak and Donald De Line are producing the film.

Mitchell is currently finishing up the animated sequel Shrek Forever After for DreamWorks’ Animation.
