Bloody Disgusting has learned that Legendary Pictures, the studio behind The Hangover, as well as the upcoming Ninja Assassin and the Clash of the Titans remake, is in in early discussions to develop another major movie with Godzilla, although there are apparently no details at this point other than this would be a reboot, rather than a remake.

Of all the Godzilla movies, the 1998 TriStar-produced and Matthew Broderick-starring remake set in New York City, and directed by Roland Emmerich, is probably what mainstream U.S. audiences remember most about Gojira. Cult film fans of course remember the 27 or so other films featuring the great lizard beast.

There was one great scene in the Broderick film. That chase down New York City streets, featuring helicopter gun ships destroying more New York landmarks than Godzilla. That was hilarious.

Let’s hope any new film will do two things – Be handled with more care than the 1998 film; and be in IMAX 3-D!

Below is the trailer for the original 1954 Godzilla.
